A strange little side quest
One reason role-playing games keeps producing good game ideas around Cartoon Cat: Naughty Kitten is that its history is full of strange turns. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. A second detail makes the picture even better: SimCity grew out of Will Wright's enjoyment of the map editor he had built for an earlier game; the act of shaping a city became the game itself. That is the kind of background detail that makes another attempt at Cartoon Cat: Naughty Kitten feel a bit more connected to the history of play.
