The rules may be simple on screen, but the backstory around 2048 Automatic is anything but tiny. The name Tetris combines a reference to four-square pieces with Pajitnov's interest in tennis. And the history keeps stacking up: The Oregon Trail eventually appeared across generations of computer hardware and sold tens of millions of copies, making it one of the most enduring educational games. That gives 2048 Automatic a little more company than it first appears to have.
