A strange little side quest
The Boy and The Golem may feel immediate, but the ideas around puzzles have been evolving for a very long time. The first crossword puzzle book appeared in 1924 in a cautious initial printing of 3,600 copies, complete with a free pencil. That old idea kept changing rather than disappearing. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
