The rules may be simple on screen, but the backstory around Haunted House is anything but tiny. A major archery competition held at Finsbury in England in 1583 drew about 3,000 participants. The timeline takes another interesting turn: By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
