A strange little side quest
One reason simulation games keeps producing good game ideas around Survival for 100 Dollars is that its history is full of strange turns. SimCity grew out of Will Wright's enjoyment of the map editor he had built for an earlier game; the act of shaping a city became the game itself. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: Atari's Gran Trak 10 from 1974 is recognized as the first arcade racing video game. So a round of Survival for 100 Dollars is not just a quick distraction; it is a tiny stop on a much longer simulation games timeline.
