A strange little side quest
Fancy Diver has plenty of company in a long tradition of players chasing timing, patterns and better decisions. Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. That old idea kept changing rather than disappearing. Pong was field-tested in California bars in 1972 and helped launch the modern arcade-game era. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
