A strange little side quest
The rules may be simple on screen, but the backstory around Avatar Fortress Fight is anything but tiny. Early computer role-playing games helped turn rules, inventories, exploration and character progression into systems that could support long-form digital adventures. A second detail makes the picture even better: In 1958, Tennis for Two used an analog computer and an oscilloscope to turn simple physics into a playable tennis-like demonstration. Not bad for a few facts hiding behind a Play button.
