A strange little side quest
One reason simulation games keeps producing good game ideas around The Patriots: Fight and Freedom is that its history is full of strange turns. The Oregon Trail mixed travel, supplies, risk and survival decisions decades before resource-management systems became common in mainstream games. The same trail leads to another fact: Doom changed game design and distribution in 1993 by separating its engine from content and spreading widely through shareware. That long chain of experiments is part of why simulation games still feels fresh when a game finds the right twist.
