A strange little side quest
Zoom out from 13 Nights for a moment and the timeline gets surprisingly deep. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. A second detail makes the picture even better: Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
