A strange little side quest
Put Tatertot Towers next to the history of strategy games and a few unexpected connections appear. Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. And then there is this: By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. That is the kind of background detail that makes another attempt at Tatertot Towers feel a bit more connected to the history of play.
