A strange little side quest
Super Slugger has plenty of company in a long tradition of players chasing timing, patterns and better decisions. Basketball became an Olympic medal sport in 1936, while women’s basketball joined the Olympic programme in 1976. A second detail makes the picture even better: Nintendo's Donkey Kong arrived in 1981 and introduced the character first known as Jumpman, who later became Mario. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
