A strange little side quest
Even a quick game like Spider Match sits on top of decades — and sometimes centuries — of ideas. The name Tetris combines a reference to four-square pieces with Pajitnov's interest in tennis. That is only half the story. In 1958, Tennis for Two used an analog computer and an oscilloscope to turn simple physics into a playable tennis-like demonstration. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
