A strange little side quest
If Planet Mining Wars sends you down a curiosity rabbit hole, start here. Modern chess traces back to the Indian game chaturanga, recorded around the sixth century and built around pieces representing parts of an army. That is only half the story. SimCity grew out of Will Wright's enjoyment of the map editor he had built for an earlier game; the act of shaping a city became the game itself. That gives Planet Mining Wars a little more company than it first appears to have.
