A strange little side quest
Put Paint Over the Lines next to the history of platform games and a few unexpected connections appear. Sonic the Hedgehog launched in 1991 and turned speed itself into a defining platform-game mechanic. That old idea kept changing rather than disappearing. The Oregon Trail began in 1971 when three student teachers created a computer simulation to help Minnesota schoolchildren learn American history. That gives Paint Over the Lines a little more company than it first appears to have.
