A strange little side quest
Put The Cat in the Hat - Don't Jump on the Couch next to the history of platform games and a few unexpected connections appear. Donkey Kong arrived in 1981 with a character called Jumpman, who would later become one of gaming's most recognizable figures: Mario. It also connects to a different milestone: Reader Rabbit's 1986 arrival was part of a major expansion of educational computer software before the CD-ROM boom of the 1990s. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
