A strange little side quest
The fun part of looking behind Math Breaker is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: The Oregon Trail began in 1971 when three student teachers created a computer simulation to help Minnesota schoolchildren learn American history. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
