A strange little side quest
Home Defense Zombie Siege may feel immediate, but the ideas around strategy games have been evolving for a very long time. Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. A second detail makes the picture even better: Computer Space reached arcades in 1971 and became one of the earliest commercial electronic arcade games, even though its controls proved demanding for many players. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
