A strange little side quest
Zoom out from Final Command for a moment and the timeline gets surprisingly deep. A major archery competition held at Finsbury in England in 1583 drew about 3,000 participants. The surprising part is how quickly the next milestone followed. Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. That gives Final Command a little more company than it first appears to have.
