A strange little side quest
There is a neat bit of history hiding behind the kind of play you find in Cheeky Honey-Boo Dress up. A major archery competition held at Finsbury in England in 1583 drew about 3,000 participants. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: In 18th-century America, upper-class men as well as women wore make-up, a reminder that beauty customs have never been as fixed as they can seem. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
