A strange little side quest
One reason strategy games keeps producing good game ideas around Army Force War is that its history is full of strange turns. Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. The surprising part is how quickly the next milestone followed. Gun Fight reached arcades in 1975 and became the first arcade video game to use a microprocessor. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
