A strange little side quest
Way of Hero may feel immediate, but the ideas around action games have been evolving for a very long time. Doom changed game design and distribution in 1993 by separating its engine from content and spreading widely through shareware. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: In 1958, Tennis for Two used an analog computer and an oscilloscope to turn simple physics into a playable tennis-like demonstration. Not bad for a few facts hiding behind a Play button.
