A strange little side quest
The fun part of looking behind Virus Outbreak is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. And then there is this: Street Fighter II, released in 1991, turned head-to-head arcade fighting into a worldwide phenomenon and helped define the modern fighting-game genre. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
