A strange little side quest
Between one round of Totally Wild West and the next, this is worth knowing: Donkey Kong arrived in 1981 with a character called Jumpman, who would later become one of gaming's most recognizable figures: Mario. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn electronic games from an arcade curiosity into mainstream entertainment. That long chain of experiments is part of why platform games still feels fresh when a game finds the right twist.
