A strange little side quest
The Royal Archers may feel immediate, but the ideas around archery have been evolving for a very long time. Archery first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1900 and returned permanently to the programme in 1972 after a long absence. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
