A strange little side quest
The Evacuation may feel immediate, but the ideas around action games have been evolving for a very long time. Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn electronic games from an arcade curiosity into mainstream entertainment. The same trail leads to another fact: Pac-Man went on sale in 1980, and its creator Toru Iwatani famously linked the character's shape to a pizza with a slice missing. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
