A strange little side quest
South Africa 2010 belongs to a much longer story of play than a browser tab might suggest. Association football's first unified Laws of the Game were drawn up in London in 1863. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: Archery was already on the Olympic programme in 1900, boxing joined the modern Games in 1904, and basketball became a medal sport in 1936. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
