A strange little side quest
Put Poker Quest next to the history of role-playing games and a few unexpected connections appear. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. That is only half the story. Chess changed dramatically in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries when the queen became the board's most powerful piece. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
