One reason simulation games keeps producing good game ideas around Pirate Poker is that its history is full of strange turns. The Oregon Trail mixed travel, supplies, risk and survival decisions decades before resource-management systems became common in mainstream games. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: Space Invaders, released in 1978, helped push video games into mainstream popular culture.
