A strange little side quest
Between one round of Pet Doctor and the next, this is worth knowing: M.U.L.E. arrived in 1983 with multiplayer competition built around gathering resources and keeping a colony alive, an early example of resource-driven strategy play. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. Street Fighter II, released in 1991, turned head-to-head arcade fighting into a worldwide phenomenon and helped define the modern fighting-game genre. That long chain of experiments is part of why simulation games still feels fresh when a game finds the right twist.
