A strange little side quest
Put Pearls of Atlantis next to the history of role-playing games and a few unexpected connections appear. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. That is only half the story. Space Invaders, released in 1978, helped push video games into mainstream popular culture. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
