A strange little side quest
Put Masked Shooters: Assault next to the history of action games and a few unexpected connections appear. Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn electronic games from an arcade curiosity into mainstream entertainment. The same trail leads to another fact: Computer Space reached arcades in 1971 and became one of the earliest commercial electronic arcade games, even though its controls proved demanding for many players. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
