If Last Line of Defense sends you down a curiosity rabbit hole, start here. The word 'checkmate' is linked to the Persian expression 'shah mat', used when the king was trapped. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: Doom changed game design and distribution in 1993 by separating its engine from content and spreading widely through shareware. That is the kind of background detail that makes another attempt at Last Line of Defense feel a bit more connected to the history of play.
What you are getting into
Now includes 25 new waves in a new environment. Also includes brand new premium weapons and upgrades to help the cause. Cities collapse into chaos as the Ravager virus mutates all infected into bloodthirsty Ravagers. You and a handful of others form the Last Line of Defense, pooling your remaining stockpile of weapons, special ammo, bunker defenses, and superweapons to fend off the onslaught. Survive 50 waves of Ravager hordes and keep your bunker from falling. If your bunker falls, the Line falls. If the Line falls, humanity falls.
