A strange little side quest
Ice Cream belongs to a much longer story of play than a browser tab might suggest. Tomatoes helped turn Naples' flatbreads into the food we recognize as pizza, which had become an important food for poorer Neapolitans by the 18th century. That is only half the story. During much of the 19th century in the United States, visibly painted cosmetics became socially unacceptable even though beauty practices never disappeared. That gives Ice Cream a little more company than it first appears to have.
