A strange little side quest
Put Holey Battle Royale next to the history of archery and a few unexpected connections appear. Archery first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1900 and returned permanently to the programme in 1972 after a long absence. That old idea kept changing rather than disappearing. Pac-Man went on sale in 1980, and its creator Toru Iwatani famously linked the character's shape to a pizza with a slice missing. That long chain of experiments is part of why archery still feels fresh when a game finds the right twist.
