A strange little side quest
The fun part of looking behind FNF: Rivals is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Spacewar! appeared on MIT's PDP-1 in 1962 and became one of the earliest influential computer games shared among programmers. The surprising part is how quickly the next milestone followed. In 1958, Tennis for Two used an analog computer and an oscilloscope to turn simple physics into a playable tennis-like demonstration. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
