Diary Maggie: Friend Makeover may feel immediate, but the ideas around fashion and style have been evolving for a very long time. During much of the 19th century in the United States, visibly painted cosmetics became socially unacceptable even though beauty practices never disappeared. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: In 1958, Tennis for Two used an analog computer and an oscilloscope to turn simple physics into a playable tennis-like demonstration. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
