A strange little side quest

The fun part of looking behind Classic Bowling is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Archery was already on the Olympic programme in 1900, boxing joined the modern Games in 1904, and basketball became a medal sport in 1936. That is only half the story. Pong was field-tested in California bars in 1972 and helped launch the modern arcade-game era. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
