A strange little side quest

Between one round of Cats Reversi and the next, this is worth knowing: The word 'checkmate' is linked to the Persian expression 'shah mat', used when the king was trapped. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. Nintendo's Donkey Kong arrived in 1981 and introduced the character first known as Jumpman, who later became Mario. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
