A strange little side quest
Zoom out from Battle of Heroes for a moment and the timeline gets surprisingly deep. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. The same trail leads to another fact: Chess changed dramatically in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries when the queen became the board's most powerful piece. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
