The next time Angry Ice Girl and Fire Boy asks for one more try, remember that game ideas rarely appear from nowhere. Doom changed game design and distribution in 1993 by separating its engine from content and spreading widely through shareware. A second detail makes the picture even better: Atari's Gran Trak 10 from 1974 is recognized as the first arcade racing video game. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
