A strange little side quest
One reason simulation games keeps producing good game ideas around Agent Hunt: Hitman Shooter is that its history is full of strange turns. SimCity grew out of Will Wright's enjoyment of the map editor he had built for an earlier game; the act of shaping a city became the game itself. That old idea kept changing rather than disappearing. Early computer role-playing games helped turn rules, inventories, exploration and character progression into systems that could support long-form digital adventures. That long chain of experiments is part of why simulation games still feels fresh when a game finds the right twist.
