The fun part of looking behind 911 Operator is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Chess changed dramatically in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries when the queen became the board's most powerful piece. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. M.U.L.E. arrived in 1983 with multiplayer competition built around gathering resources and keeping a colony alive, an early example of resource-driven strategy play. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
