A strange little side quest

There is a neat bit of history hiding behind the kind of play you find in World Wars. The word 'checkmate' is linked to the Persian expression 'shah mat', used when the king was trapped. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. Midway's Gun Fight from 1975 was the first arcade video game to use a microprocessor. That gives World Wars a little more company than it first appears to have.
