A strange little side quest
There is a neat bit of history hiding behind the kind of play you find in Virus Simulator. Modern chess traces back to the Indian game chaturanga, recorded around the sixth century and built around pieces representing parts of an army. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. In 1958, Tennis for Two used an analog computer and an oscilloscope to turn simple physics into a playable tennis-like demonstration. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
