A strange little side quest
The rules may be simple on screen, but the backstory around Swords and Sandals - Gladiator is anything but tiny. Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: Boxing was part of the ancient Olympic Games by 688 BC, long before gloves, weight classes, or timed rounds existed in anything like their modern form. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
