Roxie's Kitchen: Birthday Cake may feel immediate, but the ideas around food history have been evolving for a very long time. Cone-shaped wafers with cream were described in print before 1900, but the ice-cream cone became a major American fairground hit at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. And the history keeps stacking up: By the 1890s, department stores and mail-order catalogs were selling mass-produced ready-to-wear clothes in standardized styles and price ranges.
