A strange little side quest
The fun part of looking behind Red Ball 4: Volume is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Sonic the Hedgehog launched in 1991 and turned speed itself into a defining platform-game mechanic. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
