A strange little side quest
Penalty Power has plenty of company in a long tradition of players chasing timing, patterns and better decisions. The first penalty shoot-out in World Cup history came in the 1982 semi-final between West Germany and France. The broader history adds one more wrinkle. Archery was already on the Olympic programme in 1900, boxing joined the modern Games in 1904, and basketball became a medal sport in 1936. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
