A strange little side quest
Put Patchworkz! next to the history of fashion and style and a few unexpected connections appear. During much of the 19th century in the United States, visibly painted cosmetics became socially unacceptable even though beauty practices never disappeared. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. That gives Patchworkz! a little more company than it first appears to have.
