A strange little side quest
There is a neat bit of history hiding behind the kind of play you find in Nick Basketball Stars. Men's basketball became an Olympic medal sport in 1936, while women's basketball joined the Olympic programme in 1976. That old idea kept changing rather than disappearing. Archery was already on the Olympic programme in 1900, boxing joined the modern Games in 1904, and basketball became a medal sport in 1936.
